Hexi by Hand - with Silver City Quilters

Join in with our local quilting group, 'Silver City Quilters' at their weekly sewing session.  They will welcome you into their group and share their knowledge, skills and ideas.   Whether you are a quilting novice or experienced quilter - all are welcome to this friendly group.

 

You will be able to admire the projects group members are working on and also complete a project of your own based on hand sewn hexagons.   A choice of kits will be available for you to purchase and complete during the workshop.

Making Photography Work For You

This workshop with Fiona Lake, will be full of practical advice covering a range of topics including how to maximise phone camera results.

 

Topics range from running exhibitions to book publication, copyright protection, running or entering competitions, promoting causes, ethical considerations and much more. You will also learn how to raise your profile with expert online images.

Drawing for Mindfulness and Simplicity with Jodi Daley

This workshop will combine simple drawing tools with basic techniques and processes to help you tune out of the rush of life and connect with the pace of nature, your mind and hand.  This session will equip you to tune into a deeper understanding of materials and techniques.

 

Our resident artist Jodi Daley, has chosen to work with the conference theme as a topic for your drawing, where all materials are provided.

 

Jodi has a list of prestigious art awards, including being listed as a finalist in the 2012 Archibald prize and co-winner of the 2015 Outback Open Art Prize.

Creative Canapes for Easy Entertaining - with Chef Lee Cecchin

Recognised as Broken Hill’s Queen of culinary delights, Lee Cecchin, Chef and owner of Pandora's Palate has been awarded for her leadership in the tourism and hospitality industries.  

 

During this workshop, you will be treated to a cooking demonstration, then have the opportunity to practise some of the techniques. You will finish off with a taste of the delightful selection Chef Lee uses in her own boutique catering business.

Lee has cooked for many international celebrities including HRH Princess Mary of Denmark and is proud to share her passion for cooking with natural, fresh ingredients that are sourced locally regionally and always within Australia.

The Broken Hill Potters are a small group of enthusiastic craftspeople who meet regularly to share their skills and indulge in all things clay.  The group is keen to share their enthusiasm with you and will assist you to make your very own polymer necklace.

 

Clay necklaces are bang on trend and you can make yours to match your outfit or mood. Maybe opt for one that reflects the theme of the gathering for your permanent memento?  Your artwork can make a stunning gift … whatever you choose you will be delighted with your piece of work.  All tools and materials provided.

Photography - Back to Basics

Lauren Byrne is a trained and talented young photographer who now lives in Broken Hill, after several years of working as a governess on a sheep station near Tibooburra.  Inspired by the colours of the outback Lauren will ensure you get outside and have fun during this hands on interactive workshop.

 

Learn to navigate your camera and enjoy improving your photos.  Practise taking photos with your newly learnt composition skills. This practical workshop is designed for beginners with any type of camera.

Arm Knit an Infinity Scarf

A new craze has hit the world and we have a local expert to introduce you to the superfast method of knitting on your own arms!  Once you try it you'll be totally hooked. You don’t have to be a master knitter – novices can pick this up with ease.  And the bonus - no needles to bother with!

 

All you need is yarn and your arms to create the chunky-infinity scarf with loose stitches for a more casual and informal look.  With this arm knitting technique you'll create an Infinity Scarf in a single workshop!  When Val Higgs from Rita’s Sewing Room introduces you to this craft your new obsession can begin.

Capturing Life on the Land in Words

Karen Harrland, author of the book ‘Spinifex Baby’ won the national 2014 Finch Memoir Prize, and now lives on Boolcoomatta Station, a conservation reserve to the west of Broken Hill.  Spinifex Baby is a beautifully written, evocative hymn to the Australian Landscape.

 

In this workshop Karen shares the lessons she has learnt as a writer, mother and land manager. She will incorporate writing strategies such as ‘show not tell’ while navigating your writing journey.  Karen will read for you from her book and in connecting with her story you may choose to reflect on your own.  Descriptions of landscape and characters will come to life as you capture your own experiences and memories on paper.

Capella Bluegrass with The Janes

In this workshop you will get up close and personal with The Jane’s and together explore the fundamentals of 'Bluegrass'.  You will also learn some great songs together to sing on stage at the Gathering.

 

Bluegrass music has very sweet harmonies. Even though it has a spiritual base everyone can relate to it - as it is so much fun to sing. Focusing on the amazingly complex and wonderful sounds of the human voice; and the extraordinary things that can be created with five of them together in this workshop, The Janes focus on the amazing reverberations of the human voice and the extraordinary sounds that can be created. It will be brilliant, inspirational, funny, emotional, and not one to miss!

Create your own Silk Scarf

Silk painting is very rewarding, for the mind and the soul.  Be inspired in this workshop, as you transform a pure piece of white silk into a unique and beautiful array of brilliant colour!   Choose your colours and choose your results!

Your teacher, Fran Christie is a highly regarded silk artist who is inspired by the colours of the outback.  Fran will share her skills, and you will walk away from this workshop with a finished product which you can wear home.

The Story Pod workshop will be interactive and provide an opportunity for you to reflect, record and tell others about things you are passionate about or significant times in your life.

Matching Voice to Audience with Voice Coach Penny Larkins

Penny Larkins from 'The Janes' is a voice coach and passionate about helping people discover the full realm of their vocal potential.  

Learn how to utilise the entire palette of your vocal range and how it enables you to make choices appropriate for any given situation from a presentation to a cold call. 

 

This vocal workshop is suitable for all skill levels and will focus on breath, resonance and articulation  - all in a fully supported and fun environment.

Food & You - Review Your Relationship with Food

Did you know your mind and emotions influence on your digestive system?  If you answered no this session is for you.

 

In this workshop you will discuss simple strategies to increase your metabolism, improve your digestion, energy levels and well-being. Among other things you will examine stress vs relaxed eating, speed and rhythm, toxic nutritional thoughts and nourishment.

 

Your workshop facillitator Sharee Donegan, is among other things a professional chef who has more recently studied the Psychology of Eating.  She comes to Broken Hill to share her knowledge and promote health and well-being around this topic.

Peace and Space - Yoga with Monica

Combine the benefits of peace and space of mind with a healthy body to find your way through life.

 

You will take part in a full yoga session including pranayama, asana practise and a guided meditation. You will also receive a yoga routine to take home for daily practise.

Good Mental Health & Staying there

When the mental health of those in our lives is good it makes our life more pleasant.

 

This workshop covers how you recognise when someone may be doing it tough and how to approach and assist them.  It will also promote strategies on how you provide simple and helpful support. You will be provided with information on support services and how to access them.

 

Your facillitators Marie Kelly and Di Gill come from the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program with a wealth of information and experiencean, and deliver this workshop in many rural communities across NSW.

Mindfulness and Meditation with Susan Jordan

Susan Jordan is an experienced therapist who works with individuals couples and families. She is passionate about providing coaching  during life stage transition and helping women to meet their full potential.  Susan comes with many years of experience in mental health assessment, family therapy and alcohol and other drug counselling, but her passion is coaching others in mindful living and motivation.

 

In this workshop you will learn self-care and practical tools to balance your life. It includes a mindful meditation session for practical experience and some take home activity sheets.

Sulphide Street Railway & Historical Museum Visit

The Sulphide Street Railway and Historical Museum incorporates the Broken Hill Migrant Museum, the Hospital Museum, the Ron Carter Transport Pavilion and the Triple Chance Mineral Collection, providing a unique look at Broken Hill’s fascinating history.  The site also houses a fascinating range of railway attractions and machinery, including the Silver City Comet, and an extensive mineral collection.

Broken Hill is proud to be the first heritage listed city in Australia, and a dedicated group of volunteers are keen to share their pride in our city. 

 

This workshop takes you on a walking tour around our CBD and heritage areas.  Your guide will share with you the history of significant buildings and monuments and share many insightful stories of the social history of Broken Hill.  If you are interested in learning about our city - then this workshop is not to be missed!
